Russell Gersten, Ph.D.: On SBRR and English Language Learners
Russell Gersten, Ph.D. was the keynote presenter at the RFTEN Winter Collaborative Development Seminar on Tuesday, January 24 in Washington, DC. His presentation was titled "State of the Evidence: Reading Instruction for English Language Learners."
Russell Gersten is Executive Director of Instructional Research Group, a nonprofit educational research institute in Long Beach, California. He also is professor emeritus in the College for Education at the University of Oregon. He is a nationally recognized expert in rigorous field research and research synthesis. He has conducted numerous studies related to English learners, including naturalistic observational studies, a research synthesis, and longitudinal evaluations. He currently serves as Principal Investigator for the synthesis of research on ELLs for What Works Clearinghouse, as well as co-Principal Investigator of three large scale randomized trials on reading comprehension, elementary mathematics curriculum, teacher study groups as a means of professional development. In 2002, Dr. Gersten received the Distinguished Special Education Researcher Award from the American Educational Research Association's Special Education Research Division. He serves on 13 editorial boards and has over 130 publications in scientific journals.
