Dr. Peggy McCardle of NICHD: On Using Research Evidence in Reading Instruction
Peggy McCardle, Ph.D., MPH, acting chief of the Child Development and Behavior Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), was the keynote speaker at the November 8, RFTEN Collaborative Development Seminar in Washington, DC. MCardle told RFTEN faculty why some reading instruction isn’t helpful; why some myths about intervention and struggling readers should be dispelled; what NICHD is doing to research how children learn to read; and why teaching should be based on evidence. The RFTEN project is supported by partnerships with the NICHD and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
